Riverside Drive at Riverside Park - first time venturing out to the park since late February. Saw this old man - want to say it’s an ‘83 or ‘84. This thing is almost showroom ready - just clean it up a bit.

I never see those with paint that good. Where is that thing kept? It can’t be street parked.

Tires look suitable for a 61 model, but at the same time, they look fine here too.

My favorite is the ‘77:
It’s the year they were introduced. Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1977. I learnt to drive in one.

First gen Caprices will always have a special place in my heart, drove a fully loaded ‘79 in HS with a 350, not quite this clean but close.

You’re an old fart, aren’t you? I was class of ‘82.

I always wondered why these cars were so under-appreciated in car culture. They look fantastic when slammed, or in race-spec, they seem to be somewhat abundant in the US and they just look badass.

Perhaps, but I don't think it could have usually been kept outside and remain in that condition.

The problem is they are driven in stock form exclusively by the elderly and don k culture loves them. The odds of seeing someone not belonging to either of those groups driving one is pretty low.
So basically only unpopular people drive them. Donks are not usually looked upon kindly by the layman and that is the entire point of a donk.

Shame about the stigma, and I guess it was too strong not to leave a sour taste when seeing one. But man, I
would love
to get
one of these here...

This is why people don’t want to admit how cool they are. They are in fact cool, but they didn’t start off cool and old habits die hard.
It is sort of the same problem the panther body has. Police interceptors have a different appeal, but your average Mercury Grand Marquis is just an old, slow, inefficient grandma car painted an ugly shade of light blue.
A friend of mine recently was driving her grandfather’s Crown Vic while her car was in the shop. I asked her about it, and she just said it was a slow old man car and it drives that way.
I think it is sort of like how any manual hatchback is kind of cool and unique here where other places that is so utterly mundane you might not get what the big deal is.

Caprice name goes back to at least ‘68 - my great Uncle Jack (the boxer) had one.

it was a slow old man car and it drives that way.
This is exactly why I DO want one of them lol
But
I get you about the manual hatchbacks, being from the other side of the pond I find most of those cars boring. We all want something exotic and what we don’t have, I guess.

Yes. Like literally any wagon that isn’t on stilts is noteworthy here but I probably don’t bother to look at most modern muscle cars unless they are modified in a really stupid way. Same with pickups. I’ll give Raptors a passing glance but your average truck built in the last 20 years is kinda bor ing.
